Puako is a totally unique oceanfront community situated between the the Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea Hotels. Puako's real estate is comprised of approximately 160 lots - half on either side of the sole road that ambles along the coast for approximately 3 miles from Wailea Bay on the north to Paniau on the south.
Puako is the only real oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast outside of the Resorts and appeals to those who prefer the freedom of not being controlled by CC&Rs and other rules to the convenience of living within a resort and having access to dedicated amenities.
Puako real estate is a eclectic blend of fishing shacks, 60’s style beach houses and more recently luxurious oceanfront compounds - a neighborhood which transcends the typical stereotype of haves and have-nots; where wealthy mainlanders thrive with local families who have lived in the area for the past half a century. It is truly a one-of-a-kind community which somehow magically still retains an air of charm and the Aloha spirit in the midst of the explosive development at the resorts.
It is frankly one of my favorite places in Hawaii and the world for that matter. It is charming but not cheap - currently puako real estate oceanfront properties start at around $3M and those across the street at a third the price.
